Excessive Urination: What’s the Problem?

If you have to urinate more than eight times during the day and wake up more than once a night to go urinate you are having excessive urination.

What is the cause of this problem?

There are many reasons why people have this problem. Some of these are listed below:

Urinary tract infection (UTI) or bladder infection

Use of diuretic medicine used to treat high blood pressure

Diabetes mellitus and diabetes insipidus

Prostate problem such as an enlarged prostate

Pregnancy

Stress incontinence

Interstitial cystitis causing pain in the bladder and pelvic region

Stroke and other neurological disease

Overactive bladder syndrome

Drinking too much fluid than your body needs

Artificial sweeteners, Caffeine, and alcohol use

Multiple sclerosis (MS) which causes bladder dysfunction

What are the Signs and Symptoms?

Frequency of urination more than eight times a day or waking up at night to urinate more than once.

Incontinence or not able to control your urine flow

Dysuria or pain/burning sensation during or after urination

Hematuria or blood in urine, the urine appears darker

Nocturia which is waking up often to urinate

Dribbling or urine continues to drip after urination

Straining which is having to squeeze to initiate urine stream

It is important for you to seek immediate medical care if in addition to the symptoms above you start having fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, fatigue, chills, back or side pain, bloody, dark or cloudy urine.

Prevention or home remedies: Watch fluid intake, modify your diet to avoid caffeine, alcohol, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners and spicy food. Eat more of high-fiber diet to avoid constipation which can worsen overactive bladder. Bladder retraining can help with the condition. This means holding urine longer than usual before going to urinate thus retrains the bladder to hold urine longer.

Medical treatment: The treatment will depend on the underlying cause of the problem. You should seek the advice of your personal physician who knows best about your condition.
